讲座题目: Input, L1 Transfer and Universals in Second Language Acquisition: New Evidence from Chinese


内容摘要

Linguistic approaches to second language acquisition seek to characterize the nature of the developing linguistic competence of second language learners, or interlanguage, from the initial state and up to the endstate, or ultimate attainment. Grammatical knowledge is an abstract unconscious linguistic system that develops in response to input. Although the rate and difficulty of acquisition depend on the properties of the target language, it is well established that entrenched knowledge of the first language (L1 transfer) and linguistic universals also shape interlanguage development. The vast majority of linguistic theories and empirical studies in adult L2 acquisition to date are based on studies of English and other Indo-European languages. To advance our understanding of how language specific properties and linguistic universals shape and determine the process and outcome of L2 acquisition requires the examination of a variety of other languages, especially those that have received little attention in the mainstream second language acquisition field. In this talk, I first illustrate typical issues in the acquisition of L2 English by Chinese speakers on which important theoretical proposals have been based. Then, I examine the acquisition of grammatical features of Chinese not found in European languages, to see whether our theories hold. I conclude by advocating for more theoretically based and empirically rigorous studies of Chinese and other East Asian Languages as second languages. Their findings have much to contribute to both understanding the grammatical milestones in these languages, and advancing our theoretical understanding of the nature of human language in its diverse contexts more generally.


讲座人简介:

Silvina Montrul是伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校西班牙语和语言学教授,西班牙语、葡萄牙语(意大利语)和葡萄牙语系前系主任(2010-2016年),二语习得和教师教育(SLATE)项目前主任(2008-2011年)。她是二语习得和双语实验室的创始人和主任(2007年至今),也是期刊Second Language Research2011年至今)的共同主编。

Silvina Montrul教授以其优秀的研究二语习得、特别是西语习得方面的语言学及心理语言学路径而闻名。她的工作受到伊利诺伊大学校园研究委员会和美国国家科学基金会的资助。Montrul教授著有5本书,12本编著合集,100多篇文章和章节。她的第一本书The Acquisition of Spanish: Morphosyntactic Development in First, Second and Bilingual AcquisitionJohn Benjamins出版于2004年,在美国和欧洲的西班牙语语言学和西班牙语习得研究生研讨会上被广泛使用Montrul教授还以她规范的基于语言学和实验视角的继承语(heritage languages)习得研究而闻名。她被引用最多的两篇文章都是关于在美继承西语者的文章,均发表于期刊Bilingualism: Language and Cognition

Montrul教授的第二本书为Incomplete Acquisition in Bilingualism, Reexamining the Age Factor2008年由John Benjamins出版,是她第一本研究继承语使用者的著作,考察了二语习得和继承语习得如何回应有关关键期假说的争论。本书的主要假设是,习得年龄不仅与成功习得二语相关,而且对早期双语者的母语丧失也有一定影响。

2013年,Montrul教授的第三本书El bilingüismo en el mundo hispanohablanteWiley Blackwell出版。本书以西班牙语写成,阐释了西班牙语作为欧洲和讲西语的美洲地区的一门多数语言,同时也是美国的一门少数语言,其社会政治地位对这些地区的西语使用者运用熟练程度和双语程度起到怎样的作用。

她的第四本书The Acquisition of Heritage Languages2016 年由剑桥大学出版社出版,是针对过去二十年中继承语使用者和继承语研究的一次权威性整合和批判性概述。目前,Montrul教授正在写她的第五部作品Native Speakers, Interrupted(与剑桥大学出版社签约),书中比较了三种继承语(西班牙语,印地语和罗马尼亚语)及其在美国的语言社区。该书主要关注语言遗失、语言变化和代际传播。在2005-2006学年度及去年,Montrul教授获得了海伦·科利·佩蒂奖(Helen Corley Petit award)2013年,她被提名为大学学者(University Scholar),这是伊利诺斯大学对她在学术、教学和服务方面的卓越表现的最高评价之一。
