ETS-BFSU Foreign Language Education Fellowship
Description of the program
ETS-BFSU fellowship is an annual fellowship offered jointly by the National Research Center for Foreign Language Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University and Educational Testing Service (ETS) from 2011 to 2015 to distinguished international scholars working in areas such as Language Policy, Second Language Acquisition, Language Teacher Education, Language Testing and Assessment, and Corpus Linguistics. The Fellowship provides for in-residence research at the Center for a period of 1 to 3 months so that the fellowship holder may contribute to academic research at the Center and help extend its international academic network.
The Fellowship, supported by ETS’ Test of English for International Communication™ (TOEIC®) program, is offered to one to three distinguished scholars each academic year depending on the length of their stay. If no qualified candidate is available, the Fellowship will be transferred to the following year. Successful applicants will be invited to join a research team at the Center and to participate in activities such as giving lectures or doing workshops. They are expected to give advice or suggestions concerning the development of the Center, or to develop new collaborative research projects with the researchers at the Center.
The Center will provide successful applicants with facilities such as library access, office space and a computer with Internet connection.
The fellowship will cover travel costs, viz. economy class airfare, expenses for accommodation and a stipend (2000 US dollars per month) depending on the academic credentials of the applicant and the length of his/her stay.
The 2011 ETS-BFSU Fellowship holders are Prof. Alister Cumming with OISE, University of Toronto, and Prof. Nan Jiang of the University of Maryland.
Application and review process
Applicants need to send a copy of their curriculum vitae and a cover letter to the Center by April 31 of year 2012-2014. The letter should state the preferred dates of the applicant’s stay, outline the research area (including possibilities for collaborative research) he/she intends to work in during the Fellowship period. A committee of five faculty members of the Center will review and decide on the applications.

The work of the scholars during the Fellowship period will be assessed by the selection committee. Any research publications related to the Fellowship need to acknowledge the support of the ETS-BFSU Foreign Language Education Fellowship.
